It’s a safe bet that nearly everyone has a drawer, cupboard or pantry space dedicated to storing those plastic grocery bags. You never quite know what to do with them and only when you’re at the grocery store, are you reminded that your market accepts these bags for recycling. Pioneer’s own, Stephanie McCracken took the competitive approach and inadvertently offered to have everyone’s grocery bag stockpile recycled through an interoffice competition. The month-long contest began on December 1st and garnered almost 60 (yes, sixty) pounds of grocery bags destined for the recycling center. Our Meridian office was the big winner and will be rewarded with a fully-catered lunch. Competitive recycling…whoda thought?
The Nation’s First LEED Platinum-Certified Building
Well – this is definitely a departure from our normal blog posts, but we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share some amazing photos of the nation’s first LEED Platinum Building certified by the USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council). Although it is in Manhattan, the One Bryant Park/Bank of America Building boasts some impressive, environmentally-friendly amenities from which future developments around America will surely take some cues.

Quite uncommon for a tower of its size, the new building employs a system for rainwater catchement and reuse, greywater recycling, energy efficient building systems, and high performance glass which maximizes day-lighting and minimizes solar heat gain and loss. However, it’s the state-of-the-art, onsite 4.6-megawatt cogeneration plant that really gets the ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ going. The advanced system provides a clean and efficient power source for the building’s energy requirements, significantly reducing its reliance on the NYC grid. The system also perfectly compliments an incredible cooling system that produces and stores ice during off-peak hours, and then uses the ice phase transition to help cool the building during peak load. Another remarkable innovation is the air purification system – not only is the air entering the building purified to a high standard, but the air exhausted is also cleaned, effectively making the tower a giant air filter for Midtown Manhattan. With an area of over 2 million square feet, this level of green technology in one building is nothing short of remarkable.

More green for more green…
Did you know about Idaho Power’s Green Power Program? In essence, it allows you to purchase carbon credits to offset your business’ carbon foot print. Pioneer Title Co. has been actively participating in the program for about 2 years to help offset our footprint in the Treasure Valley. Many of our offices have opted into the program, while also going further to replacing plumbing fixtures like low-flow flushing mechanisms, replacing water bottles with water stations and biodegradable cups and appointing office ‘green czars’ to identify and eliminate waste.
Be sure to watch your mailbox in the coming weeks for Idaho Power’s 2010 update on the Green Power Program. Pioneer Title is prominently featured in this publication along with many other area businesses. (If you can’t wait that long, check out the PDF). Also featured in the 2010 Update is a guide on installing on-site generation in your home. According to Idaho Power, many customers are ‘…asking about generating their own electricity at home with solar panels or small turbines.’ In the publication are many tips to addressing just that.
